Abstract

The birth of opera can not be entirely separated from the institution to which it is intrinsically linked. Thus opera is not only a "poetic system" but also a "political" system. This paper shows how, from Lully to Gluck, opera switches gradually to an aesthetics of incarnation in an aesthetic of representation, so that opera achieves its autonomy from the political power. However, this empowerment is permitted for political reasons: it is when the state itself is depersonalized to become representational that the aesthetics of the incarnation is no longer present and that the lyrical genre seems to separate from politics.
